R. Edward Freeman: Creator of the Stakeholder Model of Business (1984) Treating each stakeholder as if
each had a vested interest in the company, as if each was an owner, helps the employees and managers to act like
owners. Additionally, a wider, "citizen" role, for business is promoted in Conscious Capitalism. As a "non-natural" person
it may seem awkward for business to think of itself as a citizen. However, it has been shown that when businesses
proactively engage the communities in which they operate in a holistic manner, sustainability, sales, and profits
are enhanced.
